The movements I use in this class come from my training in the techniques of Martha Graham and Lester Horton. The warm-up exercises and combinations I compose for the students are a blend of both techniques, including their inherent stylistic elements such as arm shapes and hand shapes. The artistry is inspired from having worked
with a diverse group of choreographers and artistic directors during my professional performing career. My classes are designed to increase and strengthen quick response to adaptability and broaden students’ versatility to dance styles. Emphasis is placed on movement that is initiated from the core of a dancer’s energy and power, and focuses on clarifying and intensifying the purpose and meaning of movement. We apply a weighted and grounded approach in presenting the combinations and work on smooth transitions between the fall and the recovery of steps. We discuss how to incorporate the breath in harmony with movement to further deepen, expand and lift the power of expression. Musical nuances, lyrical, staccato and dynamics of
movement are explored. My goal in teaching this modern dance class is to inspire, motivate and encourage students to work toward achieving a balance between technical and artistic excellence.

This intermediate-level intensive workshop is designed for dancers who want to improve their technique and expand their skills in Rio-style samba (samba no pé). Whether you are part of a performance group or just want to get more samba practice, this workshop is for you!
Classes will focus on the following:
• Technique & style
• Endurance & speed
• Improvisation
• Attitude & personality
• How to samba while wearing heeled shoes and headdresses (headdresses will be provided)
Students will also learn two short choreographies.
To get the most out of this workshop, dancers should already have some experience in samba. New material will be covered each week and in each workshop, but drop-ins are always welcomed. Shoes are recommended but not required, and parts of the class will be danced barefoot.
